Master in Toxicology

The master curriculum will last 3 semesters (90 credit points) and will include a semester of lectures, seminars and courses, a practical work in the pharmaceutical Industry for 7 weeks (15 credit points) and a master thesis in a toxicological laboratory in the pharmaceutical Industry or in an University facility included in the SCAHT network over 9 months (45 credit points including report and defense of the thesis). Students with a bachelor degree in biology, biochemistry, pharmacy or medicine will qualify for this master curriculum. The teaching part (first semester of the master curriculum) will be composed, among others, of lectures, seminars and courses in biotransformation and xenobiotic metabolism, pharmaco- and toxicogenetics, pharmacology of the most important drugs and drug classes, toxicology of drugs and chemicals, mechanisms of toxicity, organ-specific toxicology, role of pharmacology and toxicology in preclinical and clinical drug development, toxicological and pharmacological methods (e.g. cell and tissue cultures, cytotoxicity, molecular methods) and regulatory toxicology. The courses and lectures in toxicology will be given by representatives of the “pharmacenter”, a center of competence of the University of Basel including all disciplines involved in teaching and/or research in pharmacology and toxicology. The first master course will start at the beginning of the autumn semester in 2011. There will be a close collaboration between the Universities of Basel and Geneva/Lausanne.
