Research Program

Research program for the first 3 years, perspective for the following 3 years

The newly created toxicology network between Basel (1 group in Bern), Lausanne and Geneva consists of 22 research &/or teaching groups covering most if not all important fields of human toxicology.

Studied areas include
  • mechanistic toxicology,
  • predictive toxicology,
  • neurotoxicology,
  • reproductive toxicology,
  • dermatotoxicology,
  • toxicopathology and carcinogenesis,
  • analytical toxicology,
  • occupational and nano-toxicology,
  • biomarkers and clinical toxicology.
The participation of the Geneva Department of Laboratory Medicine & Genetics (including the four services Clinical Pathology, Dermatology, Genetics and Laboratory Medicine), the Western Switzerland University Centre of Legal Medicine and the Swiss Centre for “Terato-vigilance” ensure strong logistic setup for leading applied research and services.

The research groups of the Basel area, mainly involved in mechanistic and predictive toxicology, supplement the toxicological areas covered by the Centre, rendering it a leading resource for basic and applied toxicological research.

Most areas of research at the different locations are complementary or synergistic to each other, enabling to cover most, if not all, important fields in human toxicology. Considering the allocated sum of money, in the first three years, the Centre will focus most of its federally funded research activities in four core projects.

The leaders of all groups, being locally or federally funded, will meet regularly with the Centre’s and selected Federal Government toxicologists to coordinate the research activities.

Periodical scientific meetings, including all groups of the Centre, the two Centre’s toxicologists, toxicologists from Federal and Cantonal Offices and other groups interested, will offer the possibility to communicate scientific achievements.
